Lunch in Wonderland

www.kaffiborgir.is

Planning lunch in the Mývatn area this would be my recommendation.

Even for Iceland this is a unique and an otherworldly place. The great lake Myvatn on one side and the spectacular lava formations of Dimmuborgir on the other. It is no wonder that photographers, filmmakers and writers love this place

There is no other place in the world like the Mývatn area. The gods must have been drunk when they made this place. A feeling of ancient serenity and a natural appetite for destruction. I remember once taking group of Japanese tourists through Dimmuborgir on a bright autumn day going through the multi-coloured autumn leaves among the gigantic lava sculptures and suddenly realizing that the camera clicks had ceased and everyone was just quietly looking around, amazed by where they were and what they were seeing. No wonder the Game-Of-Thrones production fell in love with this place.

Building a small bistro in right spot with a view over the lava and the craters in the area as well as towards the great lake was probably necessary in terms of minimal service restrooms etc. Putting it into the hands of the right people was a stroke of luck. This place is well run with good food, serves drinks and comes with a well stocked souvenir shop. It is really good to be able to not only point people towards the most amazing landscape ever but also recommend the trout.
