Beautiful hideaway
When your location can not be beaten there are many choices that can be made and this place has chosen to rise and meet the challenge. To me there is something utterly and totally Icelandic about the smell of birch, a dusty gravel road and blueberry shrubs. Or an iron gray sea in a breathtaking fiord crowned with mountains and hills iced to the teeth with pure white snow.
About thirty minutes outside Reykjavik but very much in its own world. Add the all around great view, the shelves lined with old books and a pretty impressive whisky collection, and I´m pretty much where I want to spend my days.
Hotel Glymur has a charm that that comes from a series of details and I feel it has taken time and thought to create exactly the atmosphere that they provide. The decor gives a sense of adventure and personal style and if you´re looking for a hideaway close to Reykjavik, They also have super cosy cottages in the hillside below he hotel which can easily be recommnded.
Also a good choice if you want to be centrally located but still outside the city. Þingvellir is quite close as well as the road out to Snæfellsnes and the up north through Borgarfjörður. Hvalfjörður is in fact probably the best kept secret around, a true natural gem. Whether it´s nights of golden midnight sunshine or flickering green aurora, you´re right where you want to be.
