This Akureyri restaurant is a cool, easygoing and playful establishment serving a great fusion menu of sushi and spice rubs from which the aroma alone will take you all around the world.
Rub23 is located in the center of Akureyri across from the KEA hotel and next to the galleries. They offer an intriguing menu in a laid back place. Pick your fish or meat and the rub you want it treated with and you´re off on a taste bud adventure. Their sushi is innovative and delicious, mixing surprise and tradition. As an example the sushi pizza is actually well worth the try. The ambience is really good and there is just something about the house that made me want to relax and enjoy myself. The music set a laid back jovial mood as I was handed a cold Stella and sat down in a cozy corner awaiting whatever dreams might come. Salmon with sake and cucumber. The sushi pizza and arctic char in tempura. Tuna roll with green masago. Minke whale with spring onions, chili and teriyaki. Langoustines in a cream of basil. Light smoked salmon with mango glaze. And the pulled duck leg and seared duck breast. Dessert was a mixed plate of which the cherry sorbet and marbled chocolate were a guilty pleasure goodness. The staff was efficient and friendly and made me feel welcome, happy and well fed.
Fusion cooking is at its best a glorious movable feast but at its worst an amalgam of misunderstandings. In my opinion the concept is made to work perfectly at Rub23 and it is the sort of place you wish you had in your neighbourhood, somewhere just down the road, the save haven to retreat to with your partner or to meet up with all your friends.
